Five fire crews tackle ‘deliberate’ blaze at Cookstown business

Firefighters were called to the scene of a ‘deliberate’ blaze at a two-storey industrial unit at business premises in Cookstown last night [Thursday].

It took a total of five teams from Cookstown, Dungannon, Pomeroy and Portadown over two hours to deal with the fire, with crew wearing breathing apparatus and thermal imaging to enter the building.

It is understood the flames took hold on the mezzanine floor of the Derryloran Industrial Estate business.

A spokesman at the affected company put the inferno down to an electrical fault and said the structure had suffered mainly “smoke damage”.

A spokesperson for Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service [NIFRS] said: “Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service received a call at 8.51pm to a report of a fire at business premises at the Sandholes Road area of Cookstown on Thursday 20th August.

“Two fire appliances from Cookstown Fire Station and one fire appliance from Pomeroy, Dungannon and Portadown Fire Stations were deployed to the scene of a fire on the mezzanine floor area of a two-storey industrial unit in the area. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus and using thermal imaging cameras dealt with the incident.
