Five-star Waide helps Carrick to win over Lurgan

Carrick Ladies Hockey Club 1st XI enjoyed a rare incursion into the heady world of double-digit scorelines on Saturday afternoon with a comprehensive 11-0 win over Lurgan in the second round of this season’s McConnell Shield competition.

With the team having gone all the way to last season’s Shield final where they eventually lost to Randalstown, there was an air of quiet determination amongst the Carrick players as they took to the Amphitheatre pitch.

Carrick may have found goals rather hard to come by in their current league campaign but all came good on Saturday with captain Christine Waide leading the charge on a personal haul of five goals and one each for Amy Cross, Lyndsey McClurg, Julie Oliver, Natasha McWilliams, Kerrie Erskine, and Caroline Creighton.

Cross opened the scoring for Carrick about 10 minutes into the first-half when she netted a long ball delivery from Waide who then added a second just before half-time with an acutely angled shot into the corner of the Lurgan net.

A 2-0 half-time scoreline offered little indication of what was yet to come although by that stage Carrick’s Sophie Mills, Chloe Mitchell and McClurg had effectively taken control of the centre of the pitch.

Carrick’s third fell to McClurg when her touch from a penalty corner edged in off a Lurgan defender. Waide followed up with her second, Carrick’s fourth, following a mazy run through the Lurgan defence then Oliver got in on the act with a sweetly hit penalty corner strike. Their sixth again fell to Waide, completing her hat-trick, closely followed by McWilliams from a penalty corner and the hard driving Erskine made it 8-0 shortly after. Revelling in their continuing midfield control and a sweetly flowing 4-3-3 formation, three more Carrick goals completed the rout, two more for Waide and one for Creighton.

Probably no goal more clearly epitomised Carrick’s effort and endeavour on Saturday afternoon than the penultimate one from club veteran Creighton who with only an inch or two to spare, threw herself at the ball to deliver an amazing goal scoring touch.

Carrick travel to play Ards 2nds in the quarter-finals on January 25.
