Flapper fashion show tonight

VISITORS to the Verbal Arts Centre will find themselves transported back to the time of flappers and Art Deco styles of the 1920s and the sensuous design of the big band era of the 1930s with a special fashion show featuring clothes from the period this evening.

The event is organised by the Valuing Heritage By Valuing Memories Project, which is a reminiscence and recall project in partnership with the Derry City Council’s Heritage and Museum Service.

The event is open to the public and will also bring together local reminiscence groups and project participants in the area. The event is funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and admission is free.

Reminiscence worker Deirdre Doherty explained that as well as providing an entertaining evening for all involved that the fashion show would provide an ideal focal point for the recollection of times gone by.

She added that the event is aimed at strengthening the links that community groups have with their local museum service.

“The fashion show promises to be a fantastic evening, the 1920s and 1930s were decades of distinctive style. Seeing the clothes of those eras is sure to evoke strong memories of the era.

“By reminiscing, we help to make sense of our experiences and memories, whether we are young or old and whether we find it easy or difficult to recall.

“We do it to make our lives better in the present because of its benefits to us as individuals and to bring us closer to the people with whom we share our stories,” she said.

Margaret Edwards from the Council’s Museum Service said the fashion show was a great opportunity for reminiscence groups and individuals to interact and meet with one another in a fun social setting.

“We are hoping this event will provide the public with an opportunity to hear other people’s recollections and memories that will further generate a collective sense of shared experience.”

The Fashion show will take place between 7pm and 8.30pm on Wednesday March 24 at the Verbal Arts centre for booking details - Tel: 028 7137 7331 or email Deirdre Doherty, Reminiscence Worker [email protected].
