Guntis Jonuss, whose address was given as Mill Street, Tandragee, admitted common assault on December 26 last year when he appeared at last Wednesday’s sitting of Craigavon Magistrates Court.

He was given a conditional discharge for six months.

The court heard that at 10.30pm on Boxing Day the injured party, who was distressed, told police she had been assaulted by her husband.

She was heavily intoxicated, there was bruising and swelling to her face and coagulated blood in her hair.

She said she had been punched to the ground and kicked to the head.

The defendant said that his wife had gone out socialising and he was concerned when she had not returned home.

He found her with a friend and flew into a rage.

He denied punching and kicking her.

The injured party did not want to make a statement and the couple were now reconciled.

Mr Peter Murphy, representing the defendant, said that in his police interview his client accepted what he had done and that he had assaulted her.
