Flood prevention welcomed

FLOOD prevention work on the Halfpenny river in the Knockramer areas has been welcomed.

Sinn Fein MLA John O’Dowd said the work currently being carried out by the Rivers Agency could help reduce flooding.

“Following the torrential rain storms of August 2008 a number of homes in the Silverwood Leaves and Knockramer Meadows developments flooded," said Mr O'Dowd.

"At that time I contacted the Rivers Agency to discuss appropriate measures for alleviating both the immediate and the long-term potential for flood damage within this area.”

Mr O’Dowd explained that he along with his council colleagues and residents lobbied the Rivers Agency and minor works were carried out in the immediate aftermath of the flooding.

As a result of further lobbing Rivers Agency undertook a detailed survey of the river in an effort to develop a long-term solution.

The MLA added: "As a result of the findings of a survey Rivers Agency gave a commitment to carryout culvert replacement and remedial works along the Halfpenny River.

"I am pleased to say that this work is currently underway and is almost complete, ahead of schedule.

“This work is welcome but we will continue to monitor the flow of water through the river bed at Knockramer to assess whether or not the potential for flooding at this location is reduced.”
