Fly infestation notice was not complied with

The owner of a site identified as the source of fly infestation in Londonderry failed to comply with a notice served by Derry City Council, it can be revealed.

The council told the Sentinel yesterday that following the failure to comply with its notice, it has had to appoint a contractor to apply initial treatment on the site at City Industrial Waste at Mobuoy Road which it believes is linked to complaints.

A spokesperson for Derry City Council confirmed that its Environmental Health department received a large number of complaints from over a wide area from the occupants of residential, commercial and public buildings regarding fly activity last week.

She added: “Council’s investigating officers confirmed the presence of a fly infestation on the City Industrial Waste site at Mobuoy Road which they believe is linked to these complaints. The Council has been in contact with the owner of the site to ensure the appropriate action is taken to abate the fly nuisance.

“On Thursday Council served a notice on the owner which was not complied with.

“The Council has since appointed a contractor to carry out an initial treatment on the site. The Council is in continual contact with the NIEA (Northern Ireland Environment Agency) about this issue and the way forward in resolving this issue.”
