Angry Bond’s Street residents say fly-tippers who dumped dozens of bags of rubbish near a community play park have shown no regard for the health of children living in the area.

Londonderry DUP Alderman Maurice Devenney has asked Council officers to inspect the bags, which were discovered dumped against a wall in the area earlier this week, with a view to identifying and prosecuting those responsible.

Residents, Catherine Gamble and Lloyd Magee, said the bags dumped at Roulston Avenue were a health hazard.

Mr Magee, who is also Chair of the Bond’s Street Community Association told the Sentinel residents are concerned that if the fly-tipping continues it will attract vermin to within yards of the local play park.

“These bags have been dumped right next to people’s houses and gardens. It’s just across from the play park.

“Some of them are already opened and people are worried about rats and mice being drawn to them if they haven’t been already.”

Mr Devenney said: “I’d call on whoever’s carrying this out to reflect on the potentially serious consequences for public health. I’ve contacted Council officers and asked them to check the bags for any identifying information and to try to find out who is responsible.”
