Fond farewell to U3A couple who are retiring ‘Down Under’

A presentation by chairman David Nesbitt at the well-attended U3A monthly meeting ensured a warm send-off for the couple.

David thanked Bob for his valuable contribution to the East Antrim U3A in setting up and convening a popular and active visual arts group, adding that Bob will be missed by all for his organisational skills and good humour.

While expressing sadness on behalf of the group at their departure, David wished them both well for their exciting new life on the other side of the world.

Growing up in the Antrim area, Bob attended Massareene Primary School and Ballyclare High School before moving to Stranmillis College where he taught art. From 1962-64 he taught in Antrim Secondary School, before spending four years teaching in Australia. On returning to the UK, Bob then took up a teaching post in Carrickfergus Grammar until leaving the profession.

In 1988 he joined what became the CCEA, taking pu the post of principal officer for art and design, being responsible for GCSE, AS and A-level examinations.

Having retired, Bob and Janice enjoyed walks around their home town of Whitehead as one of their many retirement activities. They both became involved with U3A since the foundation of the group and are looking forward to seeking out an Australian branch of the movement to help ensure an enjoyable and active retirement.
