Foodbanks ‘are a lifeline for many families’

East Antrim MP Sammy Wilson praised the work of the Trussell Trust, which has a base at Jordan Victory Church, after meeting with Suzanne Downey, the charity’s Northern Ireland representative, in London

Mr Wilson said that he worked closely with the foodbanks in his constituency and commended the efforts they made in providing food for thousands of individuals every year.

He stated: “As a result of unemployment, delays in processing benefits, benefit changes and low income, many families were forced to use foodbanks as a lifeline when they found themselves without money. Across the UK over one million people had been helped in the last year and thousands in Northern Ireland had been supported.

“Foodbanks don’t only provide food but in many cases were a signpost to getting individuals help with debt management, additional benefits, and training for employment.

“It is an unfortunate fact of life that there are many families who find themselves unable to obtain even basic necessities even if only for short periods of time. The generosity of the public, the dedication of volunteers, the compassion of churches and the support of businesses has helped to meet this need and is to be welcomed.”

Founded on Christian principles, the charity does not affiliate itself with any political party and receives no government funding. It provides assistance to people of all backgrounds.
