Footballer’s jaw broken by spectator

A football match was abandoned when a spectator ran onto the pitch and broke a player’s jaw.

The player was a member of the Holywell FC team from Antrim who were playing Galgorm Blues in a Saturday Morning League game.

Ballymena police have confirmed that a man was arrested following the disturbance at Galgorm.

A PSNI spokesman said: “Police arrested a 22-year-old man on suspicion of grievous bodily harm following an assault on a 40-year-old man at sports grounds on Galgorm Road, Ballymena, on April 15. He was released on bail pending further police inquiries.”

Police also investigated reports regarding a person threatening others with a machete but nothing was found during follow-up searches.
