'Footstick' right of way proposal

A PATHWAY traversing the River Faughan near Park looks set to be made a public right of way.

A report before Derry City Council's Environmental Services committee tomorrow recommends the pathway that runs between the Learmount Road and the Altinure Road outside the village be opened up and developed under access to the countryside legislation.

The Council was contacted by members of the Learmount Community Development Group Ltd. and local residents with view to assertion of the pathway, known locally as "The Footstick."

Now the report - dated December 2009 - citing evidence from map records, statutory and community consultations and enquiry evidence form responses suggests that a public right of way exists and that the Council has a statutory duty to implement access.

The City Engineer is thus recommending the pathway be asserted and Council officers work with Learmount Community Development Group Ltd and other interested parties with the view to enhancing "The Footstick" for recreation and amenity.

The meeting of Derry City Council Environmental Services Committee are due to consider the proposal tomorrow.
