Frankie Cunningham, Dervock History Group posted on Facebook: “The programme communicated vocally the spirit and yet the futility of the Somme Offensive of 1916. The evening reflected on the generations lost to the village and surrounding districts through the interpretation of music, song, poetry and dedications – providing a physical and emotive legacy for future generations.

“Alan Wade piped in the colours with a fitting redition of ‘Sunset on the ‘Somme’. We listened to George Black, Chair of Dervock RBL, how the ‘Cruelty of War’ brought devastating news to one Stranocum family with the loss of three sons. We listened as he read from letters sent home from the Front and how Ireland’s first War Memorial Institute Hall became to be built in Dervock. Within his sermon, Rev John Anderson question the futility of War and exposed how conflict is indiscriminate providing insight to the losses inflicted on the 10th Irish at the Balkans. A free copy of the CD will be delivered to every household in the village. So allow yourself to reflect on the words you will hear and quietly thank those who volunteered from your own community that gave their all.” More online!

The event was sponsored by Ultoniae Cultural and Heritage Society and funded by IFI through the Peace Impact Programme (Education and Local Empowerment.
