Ivan Hull, Gilford Road, Scarva, had been charged with dangerous driving on the Station Road and Main Street, Scarva, on March 7 this year.

Instead a plea of guilty was accepted to careless driving and for this he was fined £200, ordered to pay a £15 offender’s levy, and given five points.

The court heard that around 7.50pm police were on patrol in Scarva when a car came around a corner and veered onto the other side of the road, forcing the police vehicle to brake sharply to avoid a collision.

Police turned and followed the vehicle, travelling at 60mph and caught up with it at a junction.

But Hull then sped off and police had to switch on their blue lights. They eventually caught up with him when he had to stop behind other traffic going into Gilford.

When police spoke to Hull he said: “I know I was going hard. I didn’t think it was that high.”

A solicitor representing the defendant said he accepted his driving was inappropriate. He added that although police said they were travelling at 60mph this was because they had to make a turn and Hull had a head start. He had a clear driving record.
