Ford visits community groups in north west

JUSTICE Minister David Ford praised Foyle Search and Rescue during a visit to Londonderry recently.

The Minister boarded a rescue boat and was briefed on the work of Foyle Search and Rescue during a trip down the River Foyle.

“The commitment of Foyle Search and Rescue members in giving of their own time to provide a life-saving service in and around the River Foyle is to be admired.

“The Foyle is a dangerous stretch of water and I have heard today how the team often have to carry out difficult rescue operations. Their selfless bravery is truly commendable.”

The Department of Justice has recently assumed lead policy responsibility for search and rescue on behalf of the Executive and will represent Northern Ireland on the UK Search and Rescue Strategic Committee.

“Whether it is in the sea, rivers, mountains, caves or lowlands, the work of volunteers in the search and rescue field is vital to the community in Northern Ireland and to the statutory agencies they work along side. I have, therefore, asked officials to brief me on the strategic issues affecting this sector and although my Department’s policy responsibility does not extend to funding rescue organisations, I have also asked for a briefing paper on the funding of volunteer groups who operate in this field,” Minister Ford said.

During his visit to Londonderry the Minister also met the Foyle Interface Forum who recently won a Justice Award.

“I am very interested in the work of the Forum which brings together an array of statutory and community groups with a common aim. Collaborative working such as this is key to reducing sectarian crime and anti-social behaviour at interfaces, improving community relations and ultimately leading to an environment where barriers can come down. I am impressed by the Forum’s focus and determination to make a difference,” he said.

Earlier in the day the Minister visited Foyle Women’s Aid, and commented: “I have met with staff from Foyle Women’s Aid on a number of occasions and have always been impressed by their tireless commitment to support victims of domestic violence. Today’s meeting was no different and I cannot praise highly enough the work they do across the North West.”
