Sean Neeson, who stood down from the local authority last autumn, will represent Northern Ireland on the National Historic Ships UK Council.

The council gives objective advice to UK governments and local authorities, funding bodies, and the historic ships sector on all matters relating to historic vessels in the UK.

Previously a member of the National Historic Ships Committee, Mr Neeson was also involved with the restoration of HMS Caroline and the Nomadic Charitable Trust.

“I’m very pleased to be involved; it’s a recognition of my contribution to maritime history throughout Northern Ireland,” said Mr Neeson, who is currently writing a book on the maritime history of Carrickfergus.

“Northern Ireland has three ships which come under the core council, including Nomadic, HMS Caroline and Result. I am looking into marking Result’s involvement in World War One as it is one of the last surviving Q-ships.”
