Former Linfield player passes away

Former Linfield player Billy Craig, who lived in the Lisburn area near the Maze racecourse, died last week after an illness, aged 72.

Billy, who grew up in the Finaghy-Dunmurry area, played for the Blues in the early 1960s period.

He emerged at Windsor Park as a talented teenager who played inside-forward or on the right wing.

He was a well built top-of the-ground ball playing forward whose skills compared well with more illustrious Linfield team colleagues of that era.

His first two senior games were during the Linfield seven-trophy winning season of 1961-62 and he went on to score 25 goals in 86 Linfield appearances.

Billy won Gold Cup, City Cup, Ulster Cup and Co Antrim Shield winners’ medals.

Billy scored in a European Cup tie against Turkish team Fernerbache at Windsor Park in 1964.
