Former Mayor in ex-prisoner art project

FORMER Mayor of Limavady Sean McGlinchey will be taking part in an innovative exhibition in Londonderry focussing on the families of ex-political prisoners in Northern Ireland.

Artist Geraldine Gallagher’s project, which will be launched tomorrow (Thursday, September 6) ‘Voices Interned’ will showcase a new body of photographic work which captures the memories and experiences of families of ex-political prisoners through a process of re-enactment. The project, delivered by Playhouse International Culture Arts Network (ICAN) is designed to help families talk about the past, by passing a memory onto the third generation of children who have never experienced the Troubles.

The exhibition will be opened at An Culturlann in Belfast at 7pm followed by a panel discussion at 7.30pm. The discussion will be chaired by Eamon Baker, Towards Understanding and Healing project, and the panel will include Tom Magill of Educational Shakespeare Company, filmmaker Declan Keaney of Queens University Belfast and Dr Maria Kees, who spent twenty years working with victims of the Troubles, more recently with the NI Centre for Trauma and Transformation Trust, Omagh. Sinn Féin councillor Sean McGlinchey will also be taking part in the panel. Sean spent 18 years in jail for his part in a car bomb attack which killed six people in Coleraine in 1973. He took up the chain of office in 2011 after being elected to Limavady Borough Council for the first time. The exhibition will run until Wednesday September 12 before opening at The Playhouse in Londonderry on Thursday, September 27 until Thursday, October 4.
