The charity recently hosted a celebration event which saw over 100 awards be presented to people for achievements in training and employment.

During his term as Mayor for Lisburn City Council, Mr Leathem’s official charity was Stepping Stones, for which he raised a record-breaking £107,105.76 amount.

Mr Leathem accepted the award from Mr Richard Knox, Chairman of Stepping Stones at the event, which was held at Lagan Valley Island and spoke of his delight and pleasure in receiving the Fund-Raising Champion Award.

“I am just so thrilled to receive this award and it is such an honour to be formally recognised by this special charity that means the world to me,” said Mr Leathem.

“Having presented many awards during my time on the Council, and as a former Mayor, it is really lovely to be specially singled out and this was a complete shock, albeit the nicest of shocks.

“Stepping Stones does such valuable work in the local community and it is simply an honour to have worked with its management, staff and all of the trainees; whom I call in to see as often as possible,” he aadded.

Paula Jennings Chief Officer of Stepping Stones said: “I would like to thank each and every person who continues to work hard, to achieve their potential, the Stepping Stones staff that support them to do this, the local employers offering employment to them and to all others supporting us to make lives better for people with learning disabilities and learning difficulties.”
