Former Mayor’s charity receives over £55,000

COUNCILLOR Brian Heading has presented the Charity Lisburn 2gether Special Olympics Club with a cheque for £55,232.97 which is the total raised during Councillor Heading’s term in office as Mayor.

Councillor Heading was Mayor of Lisburn City Council from June 2011 to June 2012. He held many events and promotional activities to raise awareness about the Lisburn 2gether Special Olympics Club and to promote the work it undertakes.

Lisburn 2gether’ Special Olympics has worked steadily over the years to allow those with an intellectual disability to compete in their chosen sports at a local, national and international level.

Councillor Heading said: “I was delighted to have been involved with Lisburn 2gether and I am really pleased that so much money was raised which will further the aims of the Club’s work. The Council has a close affiliation with the Club and it is inspiring to see what can be achieved with ambition, talent and support in the field of sport.

“We watched with great interest the many sporting achievements seen in the Olympics and Paralympic Games and there are examples of people from all walks of life who have achieved honour in their chosen area.

“The commitment of athletes, coaching staff and the volunteers within Lisburn 2gether is outstanding within the local community.

“For more than four decades, the Special Olympics has been bringing one message to the world: people with intellectual disabilities can and will succeed if given the opportunity.
