Former Mayor’s £80,000 boost for diabetes team

Former Mayor of Lisburn City Council, Councillor Margaret Tolerton has presented an amazing cheque for £81,205.99 to the Diabetes Team in Lagan Valley Hospital.

The money was raised during Margaret’s term in office and many events were held such as Craft Fair, Fashion Show, Carol Singing at Christmas, raffle and ballot for hampers ,which was generously donated by local businesses, the sale of traybakes by Sally Dornan, and a barbecue to name but a few.

Councillor Tolerton has always promoted and supported the Diabetes Service in Lagan Valley and when she became Mayor of the former Lisburn City Council, she felt very strong that Diabetes would be her chosen charity and that the money raised would be spent locally for the benefit of the people of Lisburn.

During her year as Madam Mayor, she actively participated in educating the public of Lisburn about the signs and symptoms of Diabetes and advised many to attend their GP for screening.

In handing over the cheque to Hilda Francey and the Diabetes Team, Mrs Tolerton paid tribute to them for the amazing work they undertake and wished to pay particular thanks to members of the public and to those who contributed and organised all the events that raised such a fantastic total.

On behalf of the South Eastern HSC Trust, Seamus McGoran (Director of Hospital Services) said: “Over £80,000 is an incredible amount and I wish to pay tribute to Margaret, Sally and to everyone for their efforts in contributing and raising such a fantastic amount which will benefit patients in Lisburn and surrounding areas.

“I would also like to pay tribute to the Diabetes Team who provide a magnificent service and whose support will greatly enable it to grow into the future.”

The money raised will be used to purchase insulin pumps for blind and visually impaired patients, neurothesiometers, clinitek urinalysis machines, dopplers, talking food weight scales for the visually impaired and skin thermometers.
