Director Stuart Urban was in talks with ITV executives this week to produce a series based on the murders carried out by dentist Colin Howell and his lover Hazel Stewart 23 years ago.

Howell attended Portadown College during the mid-seventies, after which he went to Queen’s University to study dentistry. He still has strong family connections with the Portadown area.

Howell, who ran a dental surgery in Ballymoney, and Stewart are serving life sentences for the murders of their respective spouses Lesley Howell and Trevor Buchanan in May 1991.

It was assumed the pair had died in a suicide pact until Howell walked into a police station and confessed to the murders.

Urban’s drama series would be an adaptation of Belfast journalist Deric Henderson’s book ‘Let This Be Our Secret’.
