Former Tyrone star denies badger baiting charge

Dungannon man and former Tyrone GAA star Gerard Cavlan has pleaded not guilty to a charge of damaging or destroying shelter of wild animal.

Mr Cavlan, (38) of Willow Gardens, Dungannon is accused of intentionally or recklessly obstructing access to a structure namely a set which a ‘Meles meles’, more commonly known as a badger used for shelter or protection.

His co-accused in the case, Shane Loughran, 43, of Clonmeen Cottages, Dungannon also pleaded not guilty to the same charge.

A defence barrister acting on behalf of both men indicated to the court that the pleas would be not guilty.

The case is believed to involve a report that police received on August 29, last year of suspected badger baiting in the Caledon Estate, Dungannon.

Cavlan won an All Ireland medal with Tyrone in 2003.

The case was adjourned to May 7 to fix a date for contest.
