Former UU Chancellor dies

Sir Richard had been installed as the third Chancellor of the University on 11 May 2002, following a distinguished career in the legal profession and having held such prestigious civic roles as the Lord Mayor of London (1997-98) and the Governor of the Honourable the Irish Society (2000).

In a memo to staff this morning, a Ulster University spokesperson reported the news.

The memo said: “In his time as Chancellor Sir Richard presided over many, ceremonies, functions and events for the University, both at home and overseas.

“Both Sir Richard and his wife Lady Shelagh devoted a lot of time and energy to the promotion of the University and he hosted numerous graduation ceremonies with great presence and warmth.

“As Chancellor he was a source of wise counsel on many matters relating to the work of the University. Towards the end of his time as Chancellor when his health had began to fail, Sir Richard still insisted on presiding over graduation ceremonies.

“He was also instrumental in establishing the Chancellor’s annual lecture which has gone from strength to strength since the inaugural event in 2007. Sir Richard retired as Chancellor on 24 March 2010.

“Our thoughts are with Lady Shelagh, their three children and the entire family circle.”
