Fortunate no-one else hurt by reckless shooter: PSNI

DETECTIVES in Londonderry have renewed their appeal for information following a shooting in the city centre on Wednesday evening (27th).

At approximately 5:30pm, a male wearing a motorcycle helmet entered a shop in the Waterloo Street area and shot a man several times in the legs.

The victim was taken to hospital however his injuries are not described as life threatening.

The culprit fled the scene on a motorbike which was later found burnt out on the Braehead Road on the outskirts of the city.

Police are keen to speak to anyone who saw a motorbike with one or two people on it in the Waterloo Street area or any suspicious activity on the Braehead Road between 5.30pm and 7pm on Wednesday.

A statement from the PSNI reads: "There is no justification for what happened on Wednesday night and those who claim to be responsible are no better than criminal thugs with little support in the local community.

"This shooting happened in a busy city centre around tea time when young people were going home from school and ordinary people were out shopping or going about their day to day business.

"It is fortunate that no one else was hurt by the reckless actions of this shooter.

"Someone out there knows who was behind this. If they want to see this community move forward and out of the clutches of criminality they must talk to police."

Anyone with information should contact detectives at Strand Road on 0845 600 8000.

Alternatively, information can be passed anonymously to the 'Crimestoppers' charity by calling 0800 555 111.
