Fountain still under siege says councillor

David Ramsey made the comment after a weekend petrol bomb attack on a mural in the estate, as well as the front room window of a house on Kennedy Street being smashed.

“The people of The Fountain have the same rights to live in peace like everyone else in Londonderry, but they still feel that they are under siege from negative elements,” he said.

“People have to realise that a tremendous amount of cross-community work is being done by the members of the Bands Forum, the members of the William King Memorial Band the Youth Club and the local Lodge members in The Fountain, and yet this is the thanks that they get for it.

“An example needs to be made of those who cary out attacks like this. The mural in The Fountain is a tourist attraction and an attack on someone’s home is not acceptable,” he said.

Mr Ramsey said he was now seeking a meeting with the PSNI and the CCI manager, Jim Roddy, to discuss the ongoing attacks.

“Speaking to residents I now understand that attacks on homes in the area are commonplace residents no longer reported them. They have told me that they have become so used to it that they don’t bother reporting them because nothing ever seems to be done and no one is ever brought to book for them,” he said.

Speaking after the attack on her Kennedy Street home, Valerie Moore said attacks on properties in The Fountain were “a regular thing”.

“Every so often it happens. I is just a way of life,” she said.
