Police are also encouraging the public to take steps to protect their property and valuables.

In a number of recent burglaries, jewellery has been stolen and there are a number of steps that homeowners can take to reduce the chance of falling prey to this crime:

• Don’t put all your jewellery in one place.

• Consider investing in a home safe or safety deposit box.

• Ensure your jewellery is insured and photographed.

• Make sure your home is locked and properly secured.
