Four people including two women have been rushed to hospital after five vehicle crash in Portadown.

The crash happened at lunchtime today (Friday) in Bridge St, Portadown.

The road was closed to traffic for several hours as the emergency services attended to those injured.

A spokesperson for the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service said it received a 999 call at 12.55 on Friday following reports of a five vehicle crash.

He said: “NIAS despatched three Emergency crews, one HART Officer and one Officer to the scene.

“Following assessment and initial treatment at the scene, four patients were taken to Craigavon Area Hospital.”

NI Fire and Rescue Group Commander Paul Rogers said two women, one aged 84 and the other aged 22, were trapped in a car at the scene.

It took around 11 firefighters, using specialised hydraulic equipment, 45 minutes to release the women.

Group Commander Rogers said: “We sent two appliances, one with specialised hydraulic equipment, two help extracate those trapped.

“Two females, one aged 84 with spinal injuries and the other aged 22, were trapped and released using the hydraulic equipment.

“Both were taken to hospital by the NI Ambulance Service. There were no other casualties,” said the NIFRS chief.

The PSNI said the road has no reopened.

Local SDLP Cllr Eamon McNeill said: “My thoughts are with all those who were injured or affected by the crash. I wish those injured a speedy recovery.”

DUP Cllr Margaret Tinsley said she was very upset to hear that people were injured in the crash. “I am praying for them and their families at this time.”
