Mr Mullan said that work on the ferry boat is now complete, the new crew is in training and plans are well advanced for trial runs during the week.

He revealed: The service will operate from 7.00 a.m to 10.00 p.m. and will ply the Foyle back and forward on a continuous basis making the service very attractive to everyday users.

“This service will be particularly attractive to tourists on both sides of the border. The large number of international tourists arriving in Dublin and Shannon and going to Malin Head, where Star Wars was filmed recently, can now be encouraged to continue their journey to the Giant’s Causeway and stay overnight on the Causeway Coast.

“ Tourists entering the country at Belfast and visiting the Giant’s Causeway and Titanic will now find it very convenient to visit the most northerly point in Ireland.”

The MLA added: “‘This service was badly missed and its reinstatement will be most welcome by everyone and particularly those with investment in tourism but also for the general public who can use the service for a modest fee of £9 single or £12 return and have very little waiting. The extended operating hours is also most welcome.”
