Foyle Parents and Friends at Stormont

On Tuesday last, March 19, a representative group of special people from Londonderry were invited to Parliament Buildings at Stormont, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Foyle Parents and Friends Association.

It was the first event of many planned for the group’s anniversary year.

Foyle Parents and Friends Association was established in 1963 and over the interim period it has provided an advocacy service and base for parents and carers of individuals with physical, sensory and learning disabilities. Foyle Parents and Friends Association has always been clear that it meets the needs of parents, friends, carers and individuals dealing with forms of physical, sensory and learning disability and does not concentrate on any one to the exclusion of others.

The President, George Glenn, while paying tribute to the many who have served the Association over the years, paid special tribute to the patents and friends of those with learning disabilities.

“The Health Minister, Edwin Poots, congratulated the Association members for all their efforts over the years and assured the group that he was aware of the needs of this group of the population. He assured us that there would be changes in the delivery of care that would enhance the lifestyle of those over the age of 19,” he said.
