Fraudsters focus on shops - warn police

It is understood the fraudsters approach staff with the intention of changing large amounts of money into smaller or different denomination bank notes.

During the transaction the culprits try to confuse the person they are dealing with by changing their request several times. It is only when the bogus customers have left the premises that the shortfall is noticed.

Detective Inspector Sean Fitzpatrick is eager to make sure that no one else falls victim to this type of crime.

He said: “We have received a number of recent reports of people practicing this scam at retail outlets across the North East, and are therefore advising shop staff to be vigilant, and very suspicious of anyone seeking to change sums of money.”

“I would also ask staff to alert neighbouring shops and businesses should they receive such a request. This will help to reduce the opportunities these despicable individuals have to steal, increase their chances of being caught, and in turn will make our towns and villages safer for everyone.”

Anyone who becomes concerned or apprehensive about any customer should note down their description, where appropriate the registration number of any vehicles used, and should contact their local police immediately.
