European Week for Waste Reduction (EWWR) aims to encourage householders, businesses, schools and organisations to take positive action to reduce their waste. With the big theme right across Europe this year being food waste prevention, Coleraine and Limavady Borough Councils are getting on board encouraging everyone to ‘Love Food Hate Waste’!

On Saturday 29th November, local botanist Dermot Hughes, will lead a free guided foray into Downhill forest. He will be revealing which plants can be eaten raw or cooked up into delicious recipes and will do a brief cookery demo following the forest forage.

Dermot said, “People seem to be constantly amazed at the range of plants that are perfectly edible and delicious, as often they have been conditioned to avoid eating anything from the wild.

“This event will hopefully remove any fear and help people recognise some of the best plants to eat.”

The Downhill Forest forage takes place from 10.00am to 12.30pm on Saturday 29th November. The event is free of charge, but booking is essential. Suitable outdoor clothing and stout footwear are recommended.

To book contact Coleraine Borough Council’s Waste and Recycling Officer Fiona Watters on 028 7034 7272 or email [email protected]. For further details on food waste reduction visit www.colerainebc.gov.uk.
