The South Derry town is the last in Mid Ulster to have the free service extended to members of the public and local businesses.

The council’s digital roll out began in 2012. Councillors had complained that shoppers in the town are unable to keep connected with the existing internet services and visitors cannot access tourist information. At July’s monthly meeting of the Mid Ulster Development Committee, councillors sought approval for £15,000 from within the council’s existing budget for the project.

It was decided that a competent contractor would be required to install the service and a terms of reference drafted up to a value not exceeding £15,000.

The committee also discussed the need for a piece of public art on the Three Spires Roundabout in the Diamond area of Magherafelt, which has been identified by the town’s public realm scheme strategy.

The Mid Ulster Town Centre Action Plan has set aside a total of £30,000 to provide public art projects in strategic locations throughout the district.
