Fresh call for Dunloy ramps

A RENEWED call has been made for ramps to be put in along streets in Dunloy to slow down speeding traffic.

Sinn Fein councillor Philip McGuigan said a public meeting was held in the village last year when appeals for ramps were made.

Cllr McGuigan said the meeting was attended by a few hundred people and there were demands for something to be done to calm the speed of traffic.

But no ramps have appeared yet.

Speaking at a meeting between Roads Service officials and Ballymoney Council last week, Cllr McGuigan said: “I can’t for the life of me understand why some villages have ramps and some don’t. I have been told they are not costly to put down.”

The councillor said the morning and evening rush hours are times when excessive speed in areas of the village including Main Street and Tullaghans Road can be a particular problem.

Strategic Roads Improvements Manager Malcolm Glover said traffic calming work is assessed on a scheme-by-scheme basis.

He said there are various ways of calming traffic and said not every one likes ramps as they can cause lorries to make a lot of noise when slowing down.

Section Engineer John McKinley said he would take onboard the comments.

Cllr McGuigan said there had been a couple of hundred people present at the public meeting last year and they wanted ramps in Dunloy.

If there is an accident or road works on the Frocess Road he said the volume of traffic passing through Dunloy can increase substantially.
