Frew delighted by Slaght Road speed limit plan

A Roads Service proposal to introduce a 40mph speed limit at Slagh Road has been welcomed by Councillor Paul Frew.

Mr Frew had recently requested enhanced safety measures on the route between Hazelwood Terrace and Carmosson Park on behalf of concerned local residents.

Speaking after last Thursday night’s Spatial Planning Committee meeting of Council at which the speed limit proposal was revealed, he said: “I would like to thank Road Service and PSNI for taking the time and putting the effort in regarding the much needed road surveys in order to build up an evidence base for this proposal.

“There is no doubt that the Slaght Road has changed in recent times with an increase in roadside development along this stretch of road. Following recent traffic counts that were carried out in the area Roads Service is of the opinion that introducing a 40mph speed limit will improve safety for both pedestrians and vehicles wanting to access and egress the various entrances along this busy stretch of road.

“They propose to introduce the 40mph speed limit from the start of the build up area before the bridge over the railway driving out from the town until beyond Carmosson Park,” he explained.

“This is, indeed, the DUP delivering once again for our constituents and on the very serious issue of road safety,” said Mr Frew.

“I am glad that the whole Council including all the parties on it were able to support me and my party on this issue and have written to Roads Service supporting their proposal,”

Mr Frew pointed out that his campaign for enhanced safety measures in the area is far from over.

He said: “The fight continues because I have received so many calls from local people asking me to campaign for a new footpath from the existing one at the top of the hill along past Hazelwood Terrace and on to Carmosson Park.

“This would enable pedestrians to walk down to the children’s play park and to visit neighbours in relative safety and in much safer circumstances that is currently the case.”
