Freya gets the chop for charity

Freya, a granddaughter of former Mayor and Freeman of the City Ivan Davis, is a P4 pupil at Pond Park Primary School and was inspired to donate her hair to the Little Princess Trust after other students at the school braved the hairdresser’s scissors for the cause.

The charity will then use the hair to create wigs for children who have lost their own hair through treatment for cancer.

“She heard about the work of the Trust because another little girl in the school had done it and nothing would do but that she got her hair cut as well,” explained Freya’s mother Brenda.

“She had seen cancer charity adverts on television and she said she had so much hair that she wanted to help.

“She was absolutely determined she was having it done.

“She is very strong willed and knows her own mind but she is very caring as well and there was no talking her out of it.”

Freya, whose hair reached down her back, went with her mother to Urban Hair last week, where hairdresser Cat cut off more than 12 inches, styling Freya’s hair into a bob.

“She hasn’t had her hair cut in years,” said Brenda, “but she loves it. I don’t know if she will want to grow it again, except maybe for another donation.

“We have to call her ‘Bobby’ now because her hair has been cut into a bob, and she can’t wait to go back to school so that her friends can see her new look.

“She’s so pleased she had it done. It is such a change for her but she’s really proud of it.

“I think I was more emotional about it than she was. I had a lump in my throat when she was having her hair cut.

“She’s isn’t image conscious yet. She’s just focused on how much she can help.

“I am so proud of her.”
