Friends of the Forces sought

Mr Snow, who has reported from historic British battlefields across the globe, knows better than most the special relationship between the UK and its Armed Forces.

“The British Armed Forces have shaped our country’s history and have always enjoyed the nation’s support,” he said, shortly after filming his recent series, The Empire of the Seas. “Now’s the time to recognise those who make an exceptional effort to respect and support our Armed Forces.”

Mr Snow will be presenting the national awards ceremony in July and urged people to come forward with nominations.

“The search is still on. We’ve received hundreds of nominations so far, but we know there are more out there.”

The closing date for nominations to the national awards scheme is Wednesday 14th April.

The awards have the backing of Prince Harry, a Lieutenant with the Household Cavalry (Blues and Royals), who served in Afghanistan with the British Army for more than two months.

“For those serving in the British Armed Forces, the knowledge that others are thinking of them has a hugely positive effect that cannot be underestimated,” said Prince Harry. “I remember that very acutely.”

Winners will be chosen in categories recognising individual, young individual, community, and commercial organisation contributions. Winners will be announced in eight regions covering England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, and those shortlisted for the national awards will attend an awards ceremony in London in July.
