'˜From Kilrea to the Klondike'

The talk is based on a young lad Robert McCahon Dickey who was born and brought up in Kilrea and later became involved in the Klondike Gold rush.

Studying in Manitoba he was sent by the Presbyterian Church in Canada to Alaska when the Klondike gold rush started. He was involved in setting up a church in Skagway which became the focal point for all denominations. He offered nightly accommodation in the church to the many men who were following the gold rush. He was instrumental in getting a hospital built and also a school. He immersed himself in all aspects of life in Skagway so much so that Soapy Smith and his gang unsuccessfully tried to have him murdered.

In the summer of 2015 Pearl followed Robert’s trail from Kilrea to Alaska almost 120 years later. This is her story.

The talk will take place on Tuesday 18th October at 7.30pm in the Sandel Centre, 6 Knocklynn Road, Coleraine, in the Ground Floor Room (turn right when you come through the main door).

Cost to non-members £3.00 including tea/coffee & biscuits. Free to existing members. Cost of membership is £10.00 per annum.
