From tiny acorns, mighty oaks grow...

ST COLUM'S Primary School in Portstewart is celebrating its 75th anniversary with a programme of events on the theme of the oak tree - the symbol of the school's patron saint.

The Lever Road school has organised a series of events with the theme “From little acorns mighty oaks grow” as the oak is the symbol of St Colum.

Last week, there was a balloon release ceremony at the Crescent in Portstewart where past pupil and BBC TV presenter Sarah Travers joined the school pupils, staff and parents to release a balloon for each child in the school. Each pupil received a commemorative pencil and a cup cake decorated with the school logo.

This was followed by a celebratory Mass in Star of the Sea Church.

The school pupils also presented “Alice the Musical” on two consecutive nights to great reviews and then continued the Alice in Wonderland theme with the King and Queen of Hearts and the Mad Hatter giving out tarts to each pupil.

The following day the theme continued with Mad Hatter’s Day tea party organised by the canteen staff.

The weekend saw a fourball golf competition organised by the PTA and hosted by Portstewart Golf Club.

Next week, St Colum’s is looking forward to its annual sports day and on Friday, the PTA have organised an Alice in Wonderland themed Treasure Hunt and barbecue.
