He is encouraging people to co-operate and complete registration forms to ensure they are registered to vote at important elections scheduled for May 2014.

“The Electoral Commission published a report in November 2012 which found that there was a significant decline in both the accuracy and completeness of the current register,” said Cllr Wilson. “Their findings in April 2012 showed that the Parliamentary Register was 73 per cent complete and the Local Government Register 71 per cent complete.”

He said with a European Election and elections to the new Super Councils scheduled for May it is essential that people register to vote to ensure that they have a say on the councillors that they want to represent them.

“Starting this weekend, over 1,350 canvassers have been employed and, between now and September 21, they will make a number of visits to each household in our area. Everyone must be aware that they cannot wait until an election is called to registe and vote for the party or individual of their choice,” he added.
