Fun walk in memory of Michelle raises £930

Michelle Peacock, a pupil of Downshire School in Carrickfergus, lost her six-year fight with a rare form of cervical cancer in February, 2013.

Following her death, the Michelle Peacock Foundation was set up as a platform to raise money for children’s cancer charities.

A fun walk, held earlier this month from Whitehead to Royal Oak, Carrickfergus, raised £930 for the foundation.

The event featured a barbecue, entertainment and raffle prizes throughout the day.

The Michelle Peacock Foundation has expressed its thanks to everyone who took part in the walk and supported the event on the day.

Michelle, who is described as a determined young woman, underwent radical surgery in London in July, 2011 to remove her cancer.

The 17-year-old faced her diagnosis and treatment with a maturity beyond her years.

While recovering from surgery, Michelle penned a book, entitled ‘Time to Take My Life Back’, giving a detailed account of her experiences.

From diagnosis at the tender age of 11, the book documents Michelle’s six-year ordeal of endless treatments and operations, until her untimely death just three days after her seventeen birthday.

The book portrays Michelle’s remarkable determination to maintain and carry herself with the utmost dignity; always ready to face the world with a smile.

She hoped the book would help other young people affected by cancer through their own personal battles.

In recognition of her strength, courage and fortitude, Michelle was awarded a “Spirit of the Community Award” by Pramerica Ireland.

This award scheme seeks to recognise and encourage young people to be active citizens in their local community.
