Funeral of gentle giant '˜Mickey Mulholland'

The funeral of popular Coleraine man Mickey Mulholland will take place today (Monday) following his shock death.

‘Gentle giant’ Mickey passed away at Causeway Hospital on Friday.

In his early 50s, Mickey had a huge number of friends in the borough including many in the fitness and bodybuilding fraternity.

He was a much loved staff member of Coleraine Library where he was highly respected by his colleagues and visitors.

The dearly loved husband of Joan, Mickey lived at Strand Road in the town. He worked in many local bars and establishments as a doorman over the years.

Mickey had just retired as head doorman at the Ramore Restaurant in Portrush.

A colleague, Gavin Darragh, said on Fcebook: “Hard to believe - such a gentleman Mickey has left us so soon.

“Couldn’t have met and known a more caring, kind hearted and a great craic of a man! Pity everyone couldn’t have the same attitude as this man.

Other tributes in Facebook over the weekend described him as “a gentleman”, “a gentle giant” and a “lovely, kind man” who “had time for everyone.”

Mickey loved all sport and was also a keen Coleraine FC supporter.

Atlas Gym said in a Facebook post: [Our thoughts go out to big Mickey Mulholland’s family from all of us.”

The funeral will leave his home at 12.30pm on Monday for the service in Killowen Parish Church at 1pm.

Burial will follow afterwards at the new cemetery in Portstewart.

Donations in lieu if desired for Diabetes UK or Friends Of The Cancer Centre (Belfast City Hospital) c/o Mrs Mona Murdock, 31 Bushmills Road, Coleraine. Deeply regretted by his loving wife and entire family circle.
