Funeral of tragic farm accident victim James Irwin is today

Mr Irwin, who was in his 30s and had plans to marry soon, is understood to have been injured by a harvester-like machine.

His funeral will be held at 2pm today (Wednesday) at St James’ Parish Church in Moy, followed by internment in the adjoining churchyard.

Fiancée of Susan and son of Robert and Gretta, James also had two brothers – Henry and Mark.

His tragic death in a farming accident has once again highlighted the dangerous nature of such work, with Fermanagh South Tyrone MP Tom Elliott and MLA Lord Maurice Morrow both voicing their shock and sorrow at his death.

Mr Elliott, UUP, said the incident “illustrates that the agricultural industry carries a more significant risk than any other industry and behind these statistics is a story of a grieving family, a community in shock and the need to make farms safer places”.

While DUP MLA Lord Morrow called on his party colleague, Minister Simon Hamilton, to ensure his department - which oversees the Health & Safety Executive NI - continues to fund farm safety campaigns in a bid to put an end to such tragedies.

Condolences were also voiced on the floor of the Assembly on Monday over the incident, with, Lord Morrow voicing his “sincere and deep sympathy” to the victim’s family.

HSENI confirmed it is investigating the incident.
