While some of the show has been shot abroad, the majority of the big budget production has been filmed in Northern Ireland, with several scenes shot right on Larne’s doorstep.

However, even the most eagle-eyed of viewers would be hard pressed to recognise some of the borough’s landmarks after HBO’s award-winning set designers get to work on bringing the fantasy kingdom of Westeros to life.

In the current season, which is currently airing on Sky Atlantic, Magheramorne Quarry has been used as the setting for the daunting Castle Black, home to the Night’s Watch and The Wall, which protects the northern border of Westeros.

And in season one, Cairncastle was also used for exterior shots of Winterfell, the home the Stark family.

HBO - the US cable television network responsible for the show - has confirmed season five will also be shot in locations across NI.

First Minister Peter Robinson and deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness have welcomed the announcement by HBO.

Mr Robinson said: “Securing the fifth series of Game of Throne will generate in excess of £20million annually to the NI economy.

“Continued investment by major production companies such as HBO ensures that Northern Ireland’s creative industries continue to lead the way on the world stage.”

Series five will receive funding from NI Screen, supported by Invest NI and part funded by the European Regional Development Fund.

Game of Thrones is based on author George RR Martin’s best-selling series of novels A Song of Ice and Fire.

The story centres on the violent dynastic struggles of noble families on the continent of Westeros, looking to seek control of the Iron Throne.
