He said that “central to their success was the commitment of over 3,500 volunteers who each played a unique role in being the “Face of the Games”.

Dame Mary Peters, patron of the 2013 WPFG, added: “I cannot praise the volunteers highly enough.

“Every venue I visited during the Games, I would be greeted by smiling people, young and old, in their instantly recognisable red volunteer t-shirts.

“Their talents and skills knew no bounds, from interpreters to guides, from physiotherapists to social media experts, we had literally thousands of volunteers to cover every requirement.

“We are indebted to all of them for helping to put Northern Ireland on the map as a wonderfully friendly place. I hope that having had this experience they will now have caught the volunteering bug and want to do it all again thus delivering a truly positive volunteering legacy for the Games.”
