Garda cut out of car after it was rammed in chase

A Garda has been hospitalised after his patrol car was rammed following a high speed chase outside Ballybofey.

The police officer was taken to hospital in Letterkenny following the collision.

Gardaí in Letterkenny, Co. Donegal are investigating the crash which occurred on the Donegal to Ballybofey Road in the early hours of March 18.

The collision, between two cars occurred at approximately 3.30am at McGrorys Brea, which is 1 mile outside Ballybofey town.

One of the cars involved was a Garda car the second was a black Fiat Punto car. Officers from the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission attended the scene.

The drivers of both cars were taken to Donegal University Hospital where their injuries are described as non life threatening.

The road is currently closed to facilitate a Forensic collision examination and local diversions are in place. The road is expected to reopen around lunchtime.

Gardai are appealing for witnesses in particular anyone who may have been on the Ballybofey to Donegal Road between 3.15am and 3.30am to contact Letterkenny Garda station on 074 9167100, the Garda Confidential line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda station.
