Garvagh designer creates shoes for America's First Lady

A GARVAGH shoe designer has gone down in fashion history after she personally created an exclusive pair of shoes for America's First Lady.

Renowned designer Anita Flavin was asked if she would create a pair of shoes for Michelle Obama to be presented to her in the White House on St Patrick's Day.

Speaking to the Times, Anita said: "When SDLP leader Margaret Ritchie was going out to the White House for St Patrick's Day, I was asked if they could present Mrs Obama with one of my designs.

"The idea was that Margaret Ritchie would take them out to America and present them to Mrs Obama during the traditional St Patrick's celebrations as a gift from Ireland.

"It was a absolute great honour to be asked," said Anita, whose Flavia and Minette shoes have attracted the attention of A list Hollywood stars such as Shirley Maclaine and Mischa Barton.

"It is a milestone in history for our shoe brand.

"I initially sent a selection of styles that I thought the First Lady would like. She is very into her style and is an absolute fashion icon.

"The selections were narrowed down and I then created a special style with a Swarovski crystal on the side to give a wonderful sparkle which fits her personality.

"The shoes are black patent which matches her elegant style."

Anita is due to hear from Margaret Ritchie this week about how the shoes were received by Mrs Obama.

"I am looking forward to hearing the feedback and hopefully Margaret will have some photos I can see.

"It was a great honour to be asked. Michelle Obama will go down in history as the first Africa American First Lady of the USA and a little slice of Minette Shoes from Garvagh will go down as part of it."
