Garvey Silver Band seeks new members

GARVEY Silver Band, which this month celebrates its 20th anniversary, is currently seeking new members in all sections of the band.

The band was formed in March 1993 after a merger of Lurganure and Lisburn Silver Bands and has been active ever since playing at church services and civic events and is especially active around Lisburn City during the Christmas period.

The band rehearses every Tuesday night, from 8-10pm, in Leslie Memorial Orange Hall on the Lurganure Road at Broomhedge under the very experienced Conductor and Chairman, Mr Tom Whyte.

Unfortunately, time has taken its toll on band membership. Members have left, moved away from the Lisburn area and some have passed away.

Only this month Jimmy MacDonald, the band’s esteemed euphonium player, passed away after many years of dedicated service to both Lurganure and Garvey Silver bands. All of these members need to be replaced though most are irreplaceable.

The band is in need of new members and fresh blood. It particularly needs strengthening with new cornet players, B flat and E Flat bass and trombone players as well as tenor horn players.

Percussion, baritone and euphonium players would also be very welcome.

Are you interested in joining? If so, just come along any Tuesday evening to Leslie Memorial Hall between 8-10pm and give it a try without any obligation to join. A warm welcome awaits you.

The band plays an extensive modern repertoire of light and popular music (both classical and original brass) as well as film themes, marches and hymn tunes. There is something for all tastes.

If you would like more details about the Band and its activities please contact the Band Secretary Aaron Smylie on 0780 4213 623 or email [email protected].
