Gas boiler check - a legal requirement

As part of Gas Safety Week 2016 (19'“25 September) the Housing Executive is calling on all tenants to ensure they allow its contractors access to complete the annual safety check of gas boilers.

As a landlord, the Housing Executive has a legal obligation to carry out an annual gas safety check. Gas safety in the home is paramount and failure to allow access to carry out the service will result in the disconnection of the gas supply.

Tenants may also face a charge for the cost of reconnecting the gas supply. The gas supply is disconnected only as a last resort but will be carried out if required.

The co-operation of tenants is vital for the Housing Executive’s work and the organisation enjoyed the support of over 40,500 tenants who allowed access to its contractors to carry out the work between September 2015 and August 2016. During the same period gaining access proved a problem in 1,335 cases, the majority of which have been resolved, however, it is important co-operation continues.

Households will initially receive a letter informing them of a date for the service check, which they can change if it is unsuitable.
