Gates called for at Backburn Path

CALLS have been made to gate the Backburn Path area of Limavady and close it off at night after a teenage girl suffered a serious sexual assault in the town on Saturday night.

Shock has been expressed after the attack; said to have happened at around 11pm on the Alexander Road area. UUC Councillor Leslie Cubitt called the area an "anti-social behaviour hotspot" and said it needed to be policed or shut off completely.

Councillor Cubitt said: "This is the second or third time that something of this nature has happened here, the police need to look at this seriously."

"Where exactly were the police or our community wardens when this assault took place? I do not blame them but I do blame the lack of them. Backburn Path is a hotspot for anti-social behaviour and I am going to bring this up again at the next DPP meeting. I feel if there were gates placed on the footpaths in this area and locked at night perhaps it would help."

The police say a 16-year-old male was arrested following the incident but police say he has been released pending further enquiries.
