Jonathan Duddy, Parkmore, Craigavon, admitted disorderly behaviour at Millennium Way in Lurgan on July 23 this year.

The court heard that at 2.50am at Trasna Way in Lurgan a group of males were causing a nuisance.

When police arrived they left the area but later at Millennium Way they saw Duddy who extended both arms and raised his middle finger towards the police vehicle.

When spoken to he said: “What the f—k are you going to do.”

A barrister representing the defendant said he accepted there was a risk of custody. He had a five month suspended sentence hanging over him and his probation order was being revoked.

She added that Duddy accepted he should not have been verbally abusive towards police.

District Judge, Mrs Bernie Kelly, said the problem was that other attempts to rehabilitate Duddy had failed and there was no other option.

The lawyer said her client had abstained from alcohol since this incident and was addressing the problem.

Judge Kelly adjourned sentencing until December 19 so that Duddy could produce evidence he was dealing with his alcohol problem and drugs if that was an issue.

She added that if he was involved in a programme she would consider deferring the matter so he could engage in the programme.
